Archived from groups: alt>pets>parrots>cockatiels (more info?)

I have a 15 year old male cockatiel that is ill. He is breathing
(panting) with his mouth open, getting very thin even though he is
eating, and he is very weak. He can no longer fly and even has trouble
walking without falling down. The vet told us 3 weeks ago that he is
has an enlarged liver, an upper respratory infection and that he
wouldn't live much longer. He (the Vet) gave us antibiotics to ease
his breathing problems and said that there was nothing more that could
be done for him. The antibiotics didn't seem to do anything as he is
still breathing hard and there is a "clicking" noise coming from his
chest while he breathes. We are trying to keep him comfortable by
keeping him warm and keep his water and favorite foods close to him.
Is there anything else we can do, and does this vet really know what
he is talking about or should we try going to a different doctor? If
the vet is correct, we can accept the fact that our pet is going to be
gone soon but if there is something else we can do, please let me
know. Thank you

Birds usually respond to a heat lamp. Careful of the red infrared
ones. Some are coated in teflon.

Try it and see if he gets his "second wind". Not too close but good
and warm like a hot sunny day.

It's my understanding that 'tiels average lifespan is about 15 years
but they can live as much as 20 years.

I've read they can live up to 30 years! My two tiels were both
foundlings, so I don't know their ages, but I've had them now for about
12 years.

"Cockatiel lifespans in captivity are generally given as 10-30 years
[1], though it is sometimes given as short as 5-10 years [2] and there
are anecdotes of cockatiels living as long as 30 years, the oldest
reported being 36 years old when it died. [3]"

Mine's a little over 8 years old now.

keep him as comfortable as we can until the end.

I am so sorry to hear that. I have 5 cockatiels and the youngest is 5 and
the oldest is about 10. They are free birds during the day and they are
people birds. I will be so devastated when they die, and I have to go
through it 5 times! It is sad. Pray for a miracle. I had a Quaker parrot
that was accidentally killed in November. He was in the bathroom on the
shower curtain rod and someone went to shut the door and he decided to fly
out right at that moment and was caught in the door. It broke his neck! He
was like my son! He used to say night night every night and I miss that. I
cried for days even though I went out the same day and bought a new one. That
really helped and I named it Weetie just like the last one. He is getting
smarter every day. I also have 4 cockatiel eggs that I am waiting on to
hatch. It's been a busy winter thus far! Good luck and give your bird a kiss
for me too! I really feel bad for you!

Most accidental deaths happen because people refuse to clip a bird's
wings. It might be something worth thinking about if you don't want to go
through the same thing again.

Jan, Thank you for your thoughts. We have three 'tiels and they are
also free birds during the day. We keep their wings clipped short
enough so they can fly a short distance, but only a few feet above the
ground. My wife had another bird that we found dead on the bottom of
his "house" one morning for no apparent reason. We got her another one
almost immediatly . We also have two cats that are afraid of the
birds! We have decided that as we lose our pets we will no longer
replace them because it is just too painful to see them go. Over the
years we have lost two cats (one to cancer and one to an accidental
fall that resulted in a broken neck) and two birds.

I keep my birds wings clipped too but my old Quaker parrots wings grew so
fast. My parakeet doesn't have hers clipped but that's for her protection
and she is 12 years old! My new Quaker is a baby and his wings are clipped.
My cockatiels wings are always short but one of them can fly anyhow. They
are happy birds and I hate clipping them but it is necessary. I hope things
go well for you too. I am not replacing the cockatiels after they die but I
have 5 of them so it will be a while. Good luck and keep me posted!

I've read it's 25 years, but either way 10, 25 or 30 - I'd prefer my
little guy to live 30 years!

I'm so sorry to hear about your bird. I know it is devastating to see
them go through this. At least you are making him feel as comfortable as
possible. I really feel bad for you. I went through many pet loses and
it's like losing a family member. I lost my 'tiel (Jasper) 3 years ago
and it was just horrible and very devastating for me. He was replaced a
few days later because I couldn't stand the quietness in the house.
