Yesterday I adopted a 7 year old male standard gray. He's very pretty. I
went to a bird refuge where they had a few up for adoption, and this one
and I hit it off like we were made for each other. He can say "pretty
bird" and he also does wolf whistles, in addition to the lovely other
notes he sings. He seems to be settling in very well, except that he
makes a fuss when I leave the room. I'm retired so I'm home most of the
time.

I read in a book that cockatiels need about 10 hours of sleep per day
and that they also nap. Will he nap on his own, or should I cover his
cage for an hour or two in the afternoon?

Thanks,
Carole

What do non-nocturnal birds do in the wild after dark?
Birds sleep quite a bit but you may not be aware of it as one eye is usually
open.
There are differing opinions about covering the cage at night: my birds are
used to it, even start demanding the cover at about 10pm.

I think mine would stay up 24 hours :) Only kidding. At the bird refuge,
they weren't covered at all. I'm guessing it was because they had so
many birds there. But he seems to be used to a cover as he says "pretty
bird" whenever I put it on and take it off.
